Help Teachers Feel Less Stressed

Teaching is a highly stressful occupation. My research on teacher stress (a survey of 1,200 K-12 teachers) indicates that the top five reported sources of teachers’ school-related stress are:

  • Feeling overcommitted at work with too many duties and responsibilities;
  • Teaching needy students without enough support;
  • Little time to relax;
  • Teaching students who do not seem motivated to learn;
  • and Feeling the constant pressure of being held accountable.......

Be an Instructional Encourager

Every day is a new opportunity to practice “perfection” at my school, Eastern Pulaski Elementary School in Winamac, Indiana. Serving nearly 600 K-5 students, our school has embraced the philosophy that in order for our students to achieve their personal best, we must maintain high expectations for daily classroom work.

Just like a team, our instructional coaches (our teachers) know that how students “practice” each day will have a positive impact on how they will “play” during the championship game (high-stakes state assessments).......

Free schools - what can America teach Britain?

Driving into Carondelet district, we pass a beaten-up red Chevrolet truck on the lawn outside a red-brick town house. Around the corner a boarded-up shop is covered in a peeling mural for "Lily's Candy Store". As we approach the local school my guide points to a stray dog pawing at a pile of litter. "Look at that pup," she says, "no collar; no nothing."

Yet even though it is early morning as we arrive at Carondelet Leadership Academy, the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. A sign above the entrance proudly proclaims: "The best students in the world are learning here.".......

International Schools expected to reach 3.7m students in 2014

New statistics from the International School Consultancy Group (ISC) show that the market is predicted to continue to see significant growth in 2014 with numbers reaching 7,200 international school teaching over 3.7 million students in English by the end of the year.

Last year, international schools generated US $34 billion in annual fee income according to ISC and are increasingly becoming recruitment channels for overseas higher education providers and universities. Within 10 years, ISC predicts there will be over 11,000 international schools teaching 6.3 million students.......
